A physical examination can help our doctors find problems before they start and are critical checkpoints in your child’s health and development. That’s why we offer comprehensive physical exams for children of all ages, from newborns to teens. We recommend children under two have a physical exam at least once every six months. After that, physical exams are recommended at least once a year.
By staying up-to-date on your child’s physical exams, our doctors can assure your child’s well-being and development are on track. We will also be able to identify any potential problems early on and provide treatment or referrals as needed.
Our Patient-First Approach
While most adults are accustomed to physical exams, children may be more apprehensive. That’s why we prioritize a patient-first approach with every exam, ensuring your child is as comfortable as possible. Through our dedicated care and personalized attention, we aim to provide high-quality health services that put your child’s mind at ease.
What to Expect During Your Child’s Physical Exam
During a physical exam, your pediatrician will provide a full assessment of your child’s health. At this time, our doctors will monitor your child’s growth and development, as well as check for any potential health concerns. We will also administer vaccinations as needed and provide guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Your pediatrician may ask for any updates on new developments or changes in your child’s health history. This may include questions about medications, allergies, supplements, or any recent procedures. They will also check your child’s vitals, which include taking a blood pressure reading and checking their heart rate and respiratory rate. Your child’s blood pressure should be checked at least once every year, depending on their health history.
Healthy Vitals for Children
Blood Pressure: Between 90 to 110/55 to 75 mm Hg
Heart Rate: Between 70 to 120
Body Temperature: Between 95.9 to 99.5
Your Child’s Physical Exam May Include:
- A thorough head-to-toe examination
- A recording of your child’s weight and height
- Hearing and vision screenings
- An evaluation of reflexes, coordination, and muscle strength
- A discussion of your child’s developmental milestones
In some instances, a blood test may also be conducted. These tests may include a complete blood count and metabolic panel. A metabolic panel uses your child’s blood plasma to test for liver, kidney, and immune system problems.
Before your child’s physical examination, it is important to take note of the following:
- Any allergies
- Current medications
- Any symptoms or health issues
- Recent lab test results
- Any device cards, such as a pacemaker
Annual Sports Physical
If your child is interested in playing sports, they will need to have a sports physical before joining a team. These exams are conducted to ensure that it is safe for your child to participate in a particular sport. During a sports physical, our doctors will check for underlying health conditions that could cause problems during physical activity. As your child grows, their bodies will change and develop. That is why having a sports physical on an annual basis is needed to re-evaluate their eligibility to participate.
